Pamela Council | A Foundation For Survivors
Art Domantay | installation & project management
Building on a body of work artist Pamela Council refers to as ‘Fountains for Black Joy,’ A Fountain for Survivors is both an ode to the ways in which we maintain ourselves and an exuberant life-affirming monument for survivors of all kinds. A Fountain for Survivors is Council’s first public artwork, and largest work to date.
“Nails have always been a beauty accessory that signified dignity, strength and glamour to me,” says the artist. “The decorated acrylics surrounding this fountain honor the beautiful perseverance of survivors who’ve overcome all different types of trials and trauma”
Approximately 3,000 special nails were decorated by nail artists throughout New York City.
At 18’ high and 23’ wide, A Fountain for Survivors is Council’s largest work to date.
“As one walks into the art piece, the loud music from dance crews, the murmur of the crowd and the bright lights of the billboards seem to fade away. In the middle of the chaos of Times Square, the space is serene and dreamy, the sound of water calming the senses.” -New York Times
