Kara Walker | A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby
Art Domantay | Project Consultant, Director of Fabrication & Installation
In the spring of 2014, under the purview of Creative Time, I was tasked with the installation of Kara Walker’s first large scale piece, to be exhibited in the soon-to-be-demolished Domino Sugar Factory. Kara guided us with her drawings and her conceptual insight, but engineering her giant sphinx-esque sculpture, and its surrounding procession of Sugar-Babies, was a technical feat, quickly troubleshot and executed by a top-notch team of creative minds...
Presenting a sculpture in an abandoned warehouse encasing almost 4-million cubic feet of space was a daunting prospect. How would the artwork compete with the vastness of this kind of gallery? How large would the piece need to be resonate in this industrial-age relic? We would ultimately decide on a 75-foot-long centerpiece, sculpted from 5-tons of polystyrene foam, and coated with 60-tons of sugar.
